THE CODE OF THE FOREST

Through visual metaphors and structural innovations, this multidisciplinary exhibition investigates the contemporary significance of the ancient cultural configurations of the labyrinth and the maze in relation to the built architectural city, the network society and contemporary theories related to urban space.

This show reconsiders the complexity of the canonical images of the maze and the labyrinth by incorporating a combination of new media (hardware and software), parametric design, fractals and generative and algorithmic design, parallel to the use of traditional media, such as drawing and photography, as tools for creativity with the intention of generating new labyrinthine forms and new modes of visual communication.

This approach towards the symbolic and conceptual representation of the labyrinth has helped to shape my project and to extend its visual possibilities, generating works whose common denominator is the symbiosis of seemingly disparate concepts that together can generate new complex symbols.

My longstanding interest and fascination with labyrinths and mazes, my own cultural background along with the problems of representing such complex and universal symbols given their contemporary currency are the impetus for this research project.

My objective for this show, is to expand the concept of the labyrinth and the maze through contemporary artworks and artistic exploration to create innovative representations in order to reveal new meanings based on ancient complexity.

My concerns are in interpreting and reconfiguring labyrinths and mazes, using their structures as points of departure. I am interested in iconographic and structural representations but concurrently I am fascinated by the multiple connections, similarities and metaphors that can be associated with these forms, symbols and concepts. I am interested in creating works that can evoke a contemplative and immersive experience and I am attracted by the relationships that exist between metaphor and re-presentation, personal identity and universal concepts.
